I bought a second hand dinghy and there are lots of previous old year club stickers securely stuck on the transom.
How do I get rid of these old stickers from a fibreglass transom without scratching or damaging the dinghy – ( they cannot be peeled off as they are well and securely stuck). Any advice would be much appreciated .

I have had the same problem - some of the old stickers on my laser are now 30 years old! However, some can be removed by applying gentle heat, try using a hair-dryer, and scraping carefully with something that won't scratch the gelcoat. This doesn't work on all types but you might be lucky.

It's something that really bugs me when people plaster their dinghy in these stickers, like a badge of honour of where the boats been - although with most of the ones I've seen I wouldn't want to declare I'd been there!
Some people just seem to think a whole bunch of stickers over their boat makes it look more attractive or used - wierd logic if you ask me.
Only thing I could suggest is a mild solvent to dissolve the paper and adhesive, but you'll have to be careful and use one that doesn't dissolve gelcote.

I wouldn't always blame the owners, our club state that no boat belonging to a member can sail without without the current year's sticker in place, and the class association is the same to participate in any of their events. By the time the club sticker has been on for a year it seems immovably fixed so I just put the next one on top!

Thanks guys for the advise. Heating up the stickers with a hairdryer looks good . The easy bit will be towing the dinghy home to do the work , near the power supply but then the hard bit starts – which is the careful negotiation in borrowing the family hairdryer for what will be seen as dirty outside DIY . Maybe using a mild solvent would be easier ! Let you know how it goes.

I towed my dinghy home last weekend and have a list of jobs to do over the next couple of weeks ready to get the dinghy back on the water to performing better and look ‘Tip Top’. Today was a fantastic sunny warm March day and I was ready to start doing jobs that I had not done since I purchased my dinghy last year.
The removal of the stickers on the transom was top of my list – and YES – the hairdryer worked very well and I removed the stickers in record time, together with a little white spirit to get the glue off, lots of clean water to wash it down and you would hardly know they were ever there – great advise from the forum.
My next job is replacing the toestraps and following the‘Caution Water’ dinghy repair advise. Then only 6 more jobs to cross off my list!

Richard - Your membership secretary might be checking your boats to make sure that you've got a current sticker!!

I know where it is - It's in the same envelope somewhere at Becky's house along with this year's car parking pass that still hasn't made it to my car - post them to me next year instead!
